Debutants Gipsies & Nomads XI won the 2020 Cricket on Ice Trophy, beating reigning champions Old Cholmeleians XI by 8 wickets in Saturday afternoon's conclusion to this year's tournament on the lake in St Moritz.
The tournament began on Thursday 13th February with an exciting match between hosts, St Moritz CC, & reigning champions, Old Cholmeleians XI from Highgate, London. On a challenging wavy pitch
(still recovering from storage) and with a cold westerly wind, Old Cholmeleians XI came out as winners by just 15 runs in an excitimng start to this year's tournament.
On the same day debutants, Gipsies & Nomads XI, from Gloucester, England, beat the school by 8 wickets to top the group on day one.
Overnight snow meant a delay to the second day to allow the outfield to be flattened and the pitch to be cleared. However, the slower outfield didn’t prevent Gipsies & Nomads posting 104-8 in
their 20 overs, proving more than enough as they bowled St Moritz CC out for just 47 in 12.4 overs.
The Lyceum Alpinum XI had a much-improved game in their second match on the second day, scoring 78-9 in reply to Old Cholmeleians 139-2, to lose by 61 runs.
With two losses in two matches, St Moritz CC & Lyceum Alpinum XI played for the wooden spoon on the final day of the tournament. St Moritz won the game comfortably by 87 runs after scoring
133ao in their allotted 20 overs and dismissing the school for 46 in just 12.3 overs.
With two wins from two games, both the UK based teams played the final game of the tournament, effectively the final. Old Cholmeleians were limited to 84-4 after being put into bat by the G&N
captain, Bill Johnson. The OCs struggled to find the boundary, mainly due to line & length bowling by the G&N bowling attack. And the Gipsies & Nomads XI took just 16.5 overs to reach
the total and win the Cricket On Ice Trophy 2020.
St Moritz Cricket Club (the hosts), Old Cholmeleians XI, Lyceum Alpinum XI and Gipsies & Nomads XI all competed for the 2020 Cricket on Ice Trophy.
The Cricket Ice Trophy 2020 took place from Thursday 13th - Saturday 15th February 2020 with six matches on the lake daily from 10am - 4pm.
